Last Lab Hours Post of the Semester =(

I am almost finished with the current assignment it was interesting trying to work on this and get over having pneumonia at the same time. I worked for about 4 hours on Saturday trying to find info on my baskets I found tons of info on Pomo, I had the hardest time finding info on Hupa and info on my Alaskan basket was somewhere in the middle. I spend about 2 1/2 hours compiling everything into the adobe documents and making copies of my pictures. I am going to school a little bit early today I hear they have abode professional on the comps in the lab so I can send the electronic one. This was my favorite class this semester I feel we learned useful information that will help us in the job field some day.

Cinco de Mayo Lab Hours

So I spent about two hours reading the six articles on Friday and about another 2 hours on Monday reading Shanks to prepare for the reading quiz. I am a little confused since the artices said that Pomo mini baskets are made for sale and in the Shanks chapter he said they are used as toys to hang off of baby baskets or an example for young girls learning to weave. I guess I will figure out which is true. Sac CT is such a pain especially when you have the flu and 100.8 temperature when I log onto my laptop I sign in and the screen goes white and no longer responds on my mom's computer I get error messages when I click on anything in sac ct. So I managed to get to school yesterday and I forgot my books but took the quiz any way. I really want to get started on my research hopefully I will get over being sick by the end of the week.

I don't have much I spent about 30 minutes on Sunday for the NAGPRA assignment and about an hour catching up on reading blogs.

Repatriation

2.) Notice of Intent to Repatriate Cultural Items: Denver Museum of Nature & Science, Denver CO (Augusts 29, 2008). In 1983 a donor gave the museum a whale hairpiece made of mountain goat horn with abalone insets, which art dealer Michael R. Johnson indicated that he had obtained a decade earlier from Mrs. Dan Katzeek Klukwan, Alaska. Johnson opined that this type of whale hairpiece, intended for use with a single braid, would have been worn around he time of Captain James Cook's third Pacific voyage (1776-1780)(American Indian Art, Vol. 35 (2):78, Spring 2010).

4. Notice of Intent to Repatriate Cultural Items: New York State Museum, Albany, NY (August 29, 2008). In 1956 the museum purchased two items formerly in the Health collection from the Logan Museum of Anthropology, both of which Heath reported came from a grave in Emmet County, Michigan: a copper kettle and a silver wristband bearing what is probably the touchmark of eighteenth century silversmith Jonas Schindler. As "unassociated funerary objects" under NAGPRA both pieces were slated for repatriation to the Little Travers Bay Bands of Odawa Indians of Michigan (American Indian Art, Vol. 35 (2):78, Spring 2010).

9.) Notice of Intent to Repatriate Cultural Items: U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Portland, OR and Museum of Anthropology, Washington State University, Pullman WA September 10,2008). In 1982 an American Indian grave was found on a streamside terrace in north central Oregon. The remains were repatriated to Oregon's Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation. This notice also stated that the "unassociated funerary objects" discovered at the time, fifty one items, including fragments of a bone awl, some stone fragments, and three square nails, would be turned over to the same tribe entity (American Indian Art, Vol. 35 (2):79, Spring 2010).

Lab Hours

The only hours I have are for working on the catalog review. I had a hard time finding a catalog in our library yesterday I would search for some on Eureka make a list and go back and forth between 3 different floors and not find anything good. The search engine made it hard also because it brought up any kind of catalog of 2,000 hits. So I did this for an hour before I got help from one of the librarians and I finally found one I could use. I couldn't find anything like the ones Dr. C showed us in class. It took me about an hour to complete the assignment. I also went into the museum to get my cards I do not have a little card for my mini pomo baskets BAS 146 I am wondering if that is becuase originally they were inside of a basket that was stolen. I am eager to start my research on my items.

Lab Hours 4/14/10

This week I didn't do much. I think the museum opening was a huge success. I took my mom on Friday we were the only ones there we spent about 30 minutes there. I spent about 30 minutes on the Burcaw reading I think that chapter is great advice a how to guide to get a job at museums. I like that he suggests what kinds of college classes to take. I spent about an hour on this week's assignment looking at the job boards, it is interesting to read the different positions that museums have they are not all the same at each museum. I do feel under qualified but I am going to work on that after graduation. I am looking forward to the guest lecture today. I also spent about an hour catching up on reading everyone's blogs.

Museum Job Assigment

In the reading Burcaw suggests to have a liberal arts degree and take art appreciation and anthropology. Its funny because my first major was liberal arts and I have my AA in that and I have taken art appreciation and now I am an Anthropology major. I wanted to be a elementary teacher and I took Anthropology 1 as my science requirement and everything changed. I have no museum experience, I plan to get an internship when I come back in the Fall hopefully at the California Museum. I really want a internship at the American History Museum at the Smithsonian that would also be my dream job. For that internship I would have to pay my way there and have to get a place to live so I am going to have to save up for that. Ideally I would like to work in a Natural History Museum. In a way this class is volunteer experience. After I get some experience volunteer, paid or internship I plan to apply to Chico State for grad school they have a great museum program. So after I get my masters I can get a job at a museum.

I saw that the Museum of Man had a few positions the rest were for executive or director positions at art museums. I would be interested in the digital recorder position and if I had more experience I would apply for Collections Manager with conservation training.

The Institute for Learning Innovation (ILI), a nationally prominent, non-profit, informal learning research and evaluation organization, is seeking a Research Associate to join our team. The work of the Institute is focused on better understanding and supporting efforts to facilitate learning in non-school contexts, across the lifespan. Lab Hours 4/7/10

Thursday 3/25 before break I spent three hours working in the museum on group 4's wall. I needed some more practice mounting and cutting the panels. Over Spring Break I got caught up on reading, Friday I spent two hours, Sunday about an hour and yesterday hour and a half, now I am caught up on reading. I really like the Shanks book I have found info that I can use for my basket report. I am excited for today's opening, we have all worked hard.

Lab Hours or lack there of

This week has been crazy I have had midterms in my 3 other classes, so I have neglected this class. I am behind on the reading but I will get caught up over Spring Break. I did read everyone's blogs that only took 30 minutes. I am going to try to help out tomorrow in the museum since Bishop is furloughed and midterms will be over, last one tonight!

Lab Hours St. Pattys Day

This week was a good week, group 4 worked together well to help each other with our portion of the exhibit. I worked for about an hour on Thursday night on my portion but I was getting confused fast. We met as a group on Friday in the museum workroom I was there for 2 hours I finished my research then and spent an hour on Saturday finishing my portion. My portion was answering "What is consultation?", list of CA federally recognized tribes, "What is a federally recognized tribe?", an example of a cap that has gone through consultation and what happens when there are competing claims. I spent about 30 minutes this weekend reviewing and proof reading my groups portions. And about another 30 minutes reading blogs this morning. Because I have been studying for midterms I am behind in reading hopefully I will get caught up this week. I am excited that group 2 is using one of my items the mini Pomo baskets. And I am looking forward to the Ralph Shanks Lecture today.

Lab hours week of 3/3-3/10

This week I can say I put in some work for this class and I finally have a clear understanding of what is going on. On Thursday I met with my group and we discussed what we wanted to do. We are dealing with NAGPRA and it is really helpful that 3 of us took Dr. Yu's CRM class last semester and we have a lot of info already. All together I think we were together for about 3 hours in the library. On Sunday Catherine and I went to the State Indian Museum I have never been, it was amazing there was so much to look at. Al the docent was great he gave us a lot of info. He explained to us that some of the baskets were warped or bending, loosing their form because their cases were not hydrated I had no idea that could affect them so much. There was another basket that wasn't finished and it was interesting to see the material that way. I liked the mini baskets the most and I also enjoyed seeing other Pomo and Hupa baskets because my baskets are from those tribes. We were there for about an hour. Our group met with Dr. C today in the museum to submit our ideas for her approval I was late and I think the meeting was 30-45 minutes long. We found out we wanted to do too much and now we have a clearer idea of what is expected of us. I really like my group we work well together, we all know our part and I know no one will be a slacker. My portion will be answering the question "What is consultation?" and giving a example using Petras' widow cap and a work cap going through the process. I will also explain the differences between federally recognized tribes and non federally recognized tribes. I am excited for the exhibit and to hear on Wednesday what the other groups have come up with. On Sunday I spent and hour on the reading I will get caught up tonight or tomorrow. I also spent about 30 minutes this week reading everyone's blogs.

3/3/10

Last Wednesday night I spent 2 hours reading everyone's blogs, before I pretty much just read a couple entries and Dr. Castaneda's . I now have a better understanding of what is going on. After reading Michelle's blog I understood why everyone else was posting what item to put on the postcard. Holly, Michelle, Laura, Stacey and Carrie had very informative blogs that were helpful. I do agree with Brian that we should meet outside of class, we are just weeks away from the opening. I am eager to find out what happened with the trip to Sloughhouse. I spent 2 hours yesterday with Nessa working on the Deed of Gift assignment and an hour last night and this morning completing the assignment. Next week I hope to start research on my items and I am going to plan to read everyone's blogs more often.

Post for 2/24/10

Last Thursday I got to see my third item the Alaskan basket. I worked on my blog for about an hour this week putting up the pictures of my artifacts. I have been trying to figure out how to move things around on my blog so everything is not on the left side but I haven't figured it out yet. I spent about 3 hours getting caught up on reading to prepare for the quiz I don't know if our readings count for lab hours or not but that the bulk of what I did this week. I had trouble downloading the Cotton file from Sac CT I kept getting errors but I went to school and was download it and email it to myself and I spent an 45 minutes reading over it. I didn't do much this week.

Lab hours

Im not sure what we are suppossed to do for our hours, but I spent approx 2 hours last week working on my blog, 3 hours on Friday looking at other museum webpages, looking into the Smithsonian internships and about another hour on Sunday looking at websites. This is my research so far. My artifacts are the mini baskets and another small basket, I have not seen the Alaskan one yet.
